Windscreen Cover For Windscreen Damage

By Sandy Naidu | May 4, 2009

A couple of weeks ago I had volunteered for canteen duty at my daughter’s school. I got there early, parked my car in the usual place and was all set for a busy day. It was a hectic but a fun day. I finished my duty at around 1:00 pm and was looking forward to a relaxing couple of hours before I pick up my daughter. But things unfortunately did not turn out as planned. I got to the parking spot and found my car’s passenger’s side windscreen all smashed. Nothing from inside the car was missing but the windscreen was a complete write off.

I called O’Brien’s, got the windscreen fixed - the repair guys were very friendly. All fixed by the end of the afternoon - and thankfully I am covered for the windscreen cover and so the bill from O’Brien’s was all taken care off.

Windscreen cover is often overlooked when taking out car insurance. Here are some handy pointers about windscreen cover:

1. Windscreen Cover does not automatically become a part of comprehensive car insurance. You will have to take it out as an extra option and usually there is a small extra fee. This will cover you for repair or replacement of the windscreen and excess will be waived.

2. If you do not take out this option then an excess has to be paid and this is usually more than the windscreen repair cost.

3. Check if the option will cover you both for the repair and replacement of the windscreen. Some will cover you only for repair.

4. Some insurance policies will have no excess for the first windscreen claim only. So check this as well.

5. If you are covered for the windscreen cover then pay the repair company first and then call the insurance company, inform them of the accident and then send them the detail (copy of invoice).
